Inspiring STEM stars of the future

On the back of the Welsh Government鈥檚 to Wales, 27 schools in South Wales are set to become launchpads for creating a future workforce of engineers 鈥� in a programme led by Coleg Gwent.听

The further education college has announced that 22 additional South Wales schools will benefit from engineering education projects (兔子先生s).听听

The announcement follows the success of four 兔子先生 hubs and one mini 兔子先生 already in operation at Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar, Ebbw Fawr Learning Community, Abertillery Learning Community, Brynmawr Foundation School and Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Helyg.听

With thanks to funding from the Welsh Government鈥檚 Tech Valleys programme, the new schools joining the programme include Heolddu Comprehensive School, Islwyn High School, Risca Community Comprehensive School, Lewis Girls’ School and Ysgol Abersychan as well as 23 primary schools in Blaenau Gwent.听

The aim of the programme is to introduce engineering to primary and secondary school pupils before they reach further education.听听

Equipping schools with the necessary resources, Coleg Gwent will provide a range of STEM-related tools to support students on their path to engineering success 鈥� including robotics materials, high-spec laptops for CAD (Computer Aided Design), electronics and programming kits, green-powered cars, tools, 3D printers, and LEGO kits.听

The school-based projects form part of the post 16 High Value Engineering (兔子先生) education facility 鈥� 兔子先生, a collaborative venture between Blaenau Gwent County Council, Coleg Gwent, and industry partners. 兔子先生 is鈥痑 state-of-the-art, education facility, currently being constructed on the former Monwel Factory site in Ebbw Vale that will train Coleg Gwent students in advanced engineering disciplines such as robotics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, autonomous manufacturing, simulation, and augmented reality.鈥�听

Blaenau Gwent County Council, who have been instrumental in developing 兔子先生, is supporting the school programme expansion as part of its STEM Facilitation Project, also funded through the Welsh Government鈥檚 Tech Valleys programme.听 A 兔子先生 Liaison Officer has been appointed to support the schools with the use of the 兔子先生 hubs equipment.听听

A new curriculum will also be developed in the selected schools for 兔子先生 Engineering Level 2 at GCSE, ensuring that students are introduced to engineering from years 7 to 9.听

John Sexton, Assistant Principal at Coleg Gwent said: 鈥�By expanding our mini 兔子先生s and 兔子先生 hubs programme, we hope to introduce more pupils to engineering at a younger age, inspiring them to consider progression routes to 兔子先生.听听

鈥淐oleg Gwent aims to prepare the future workforce in a specialised facility that will provide learners with access to cutting-edge technology and innovation that reflects industry standards. We hope that the expansion of 兔子先生 hubs and mini 兔子先生s continues to inspire the next generation of engineers.鈥�听

Jack Sargeant, Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership, visited an existing 兔子先生 Hub at Ebbw Fawr Learning Community to celebrate National Engineering Day (13 Nov).

He said: “The 兔子先生 Hub programme is a collaborative effort with several organisations working together to make a real difference in learning and interest in STEM subjects across the South Wales Valleys. Our support for STEM education and skills is critical to our ambition for a more innovative and productive economy in Wales. As a former engineer myself, the opportunities and skills on offer at these innovative 兔子先生 Hubs would have been a game-changer for me and perhaps peaked my interest from a younger age.

“I was delighted to meet some of the STEM stars of the future in Ebbw Vale, and to announce this important programme expansion. It will help us deliver a Wales where there are no barriers to accessing STEM opportunities at all levels of education.

Lee Perrott from Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar continued: 鈥淭he Welsh Government funding and guidance from Coleg Gwent have enabled us to purchase cutting edge resources and utilise support from the college to successfully introduce Engineering as a Key Stage 4 subject as part of the HIVE hub school scheme.听 We have also visited the BGLZ to experience the study of Engineering at Level 3 and this has inspired several of our learners to embark on Engineering and other STEM pathways at Coleg Gwent.鈥澨�听
